Question 1 (100-200 words)
Define Norman Klein's concept of "scripted space" and provide minimum 2 examples. Does the concept of "scripted space" has a relationship to the concept of "navigable space" as discussed in Chapter 5?

Question 2 (100-200 words)
The chapter "Illusions" discusses some ways in which computer-generated illusionistic images are diffirent from lens-based images of reality. Discuss minimum two addtional diffirences not mentioned in the chapter.

Essay 1 (approximately 500 words)
Using Natalie's Bookchin's "The Intruder", explain the difference between the logic of narrative and the logic of database. Use this work to support or refute the
argument that new media reverses the relationship between the paradigmatic and the syntagmatic: "Database (the paradigm) is given material existence, while
narrative (the syntagm) is dematerialized" (Manovich 231).

Essay 2 (approximately 500 words)
The section "Digital Cinema and the History of a Moving Image" discusses how computerisation changes the indentity of cinema, making it a subset of animation.
(1) Summarize the historical argument presented in this section.
(2) Present counter-arguments to support the view that live action continues to define the identity of cinema, despite the systematic use of computers in pre and post production.

 

 

Grading criteria
Final exams will be graded based upon 3 criteria: originality, coherence; persuasiveness.
(1) Originality: how original is your thesis? Does it make sense?
(2) Coherence: is your answer coherent? Does the writing logically flows from one idea to the next? Do you clearly separate general ideas and particular examples?
(3) Persuasiveness: do you provide enough support for your argument to convince the reader?
You are also expected to cite all your references using one of the standard citation conventions.
