MIDTERM EXAM
Exam is due May 11 in class.
Instructions:
Write two short essays answering the questions below.
Each essay should be 2 double spaced pages in length
(500-600 words).
Type and double space all text.
Include full references to any material being quoted.
Provide full URLs to any Web sites being referred
to.
A larger part of each essay should be devoted to discussing the examples presented in the lectures.
Essay 1. Discuss how the same strategies
for organizing information can be found both in new media and in other
areas of modern culture (art, film, video, design, etc.). Your answer should
include analysis of one example from Manovich's lecture and one example
from Lunenfeld's lecture.
For instance, you can discuss
the connection between Lissitzky's exhibition design and the use of windows
and menus in modern Graphical User Interface (Manovich's lecture); or you
can relate Gary Hill's "Site Recite" video and organization of information
on the Web (Lunenfeld's lecture).
Essay 2. Discuss how the Web offers new possibilities
for distribution of artistic works and also changes relations
between professional producers/companies and independent/amateur
makers. Your answer should include at least one example from Adriene Jenik's
lecture and one example from Bart Cheever's lecture.
For instance, you can discuss
how independent filmmakers can now make films using inexpensive DV (Digital
Video) technology and distribute them over the Web (Cheever's lecture)
or how artists can work with the commercial computer games ( Jenik's lecture).
